FAQs

When can I start massaging my baby?

You can start from the day your baby is born. We call it nuturing touch, so any gentle touch will help with bonding, especially skin-to-skin. Once their umbilical cord falls off and heals you can do more strokes. We cover the progression in the classes.

What are the benefits of baby massage?

Baby massage has been shown to promote bonding between the parent and baby, improve sleep patterns, reduce stress and anxiety, enhance digestion and relieve colic, and improve motor development. The list goes on...

What type of oil can I use to massage my baby?

Our 3 recommendations:

1. Vegetable oil -needs to be edible as your little one will put their hands and feet stright in their mouths

2. Cold pressed - for quailty purposes

3. Unscented - don't make baby's favourite smell, you!

Recent researchs indicates that Olive Oil should NOT be used to massage baby skin.

What do I do if my baby doesn't like massage?

We never massage a baby that is saying 'no'. Babies have different alert states which we will learn more about in the classes. Their quiet - active alert stages are the ideal time to massage.

Can I massage my baby with physical or medical needs?

In short - Yes. I have a lot of experience with babies with complex needs and will be happy to go through specific precautions with you in class.

How often should I massage my baby?

We recommend daily if possible. Trying to build it into your daily routine, maybe at bedtime. Consistency is key!

How long should I massage my baby for?

Every baby is different and every age is different. General the younger the baby the short the massage window. You don't have to do the whole body every time, maybe just the legs one day and the tummy the next. There are no strict rules, something is better than nothing!

Can I massage my baby when they are older?

YES! We talk a lot about adapting your techniques as your baby grows. You can change the position you massage in - maybe on your knee or sitting up. You can add nursery rhymes, songs or toys. You can tell stories and ask them to join in. You can even offer foot rubs or shoulder massage to teens - it is all about nuturing touch.
